  LABOUR DAY
QUESTION 1.Why do we have Labour weekend?
QUESTION 2. Who Invented labour weekend?
QUESTION 3. When was the first labour day?
QUESTION 4. What day is Labour day?

New Zealand workers was the first in the world to the right to an eight-hour day a public holiday. it was held in honour of working people. Labour Day is a public holiday held on the fourth Monday in October.  Samuel Parnell invented Labour Day for the people who work.  It was first celebrated on the 28 October 1890, the fourth Monday in October.

A lot of workers were having stop work meetings around the country to protest about the unfairness of their employers.  Some workers  were put out of their jobs and somebody else came in to do their work.

Employers claimed the stop work meeting breached the agreement and replaced the men who attended with other (union) workers. The union responded by refusing to work until the dismissed men were given their jobs back. The employers argued that the wharfies were on strike; the wharfies claimed they had been locked out.

In later years other claimants have come forward to the title of founder of the eight-hour system, but Parnell's claim remains the best.
